Palazzo Trojani is one of the most important noble residences of the mid-nineteenth century, beyond which we can see a short stretch of the ancient town walls with the remains of a perimeter tower of defensive and lookout character. The Palazzo was built next to the Church of Saints Valentino and Damiano, by Pietro Trojani, originally from Pescosansonesco (Pe), probably in the first half of the 19th century.
His grandson Pietro Trojani (1885-1938), Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown of Italy and silver medal for military valor, was granted the title of baron in 1928. He was a friend of engineer Corradino d’Ascanio (1891-1981), a brilliant inventor from Popoli, later famous for being the father of the Vespa. With him, he founded a company in 1925, financing all his numerous researches. In particular, they worked on what is probably among D’Ascanio’s most ingenious inventions, namely the helicopter: the first prototype, called D’A.T.1 from the initials of their surnames, was built in 1926 and its first flight was tested in the courtyard of the Camplone Foundries in Pescara; this was followed by the improved models D’A.T.2 and D’A.T.3, the latter in 1930, which achieved world records for duration (8’ 45”), distance (m.1078.60), and height (m.18).
