The area that houses the town hall and the elementary schools was once a rural area, in the immediate vicinity of the oldest part of the town. Until the early twentieth century, the schools, the town hall, and other offices were located in the highest part of the village. Both buildings were severely damaged following the Marsica earthquake of January 13, 1915: in a council resolution dated February 4, 1915, there is a list of the damages caused: βthe damages caused by the earthquake of last January 13 are far greater than initially believed, especially due to the repeated aftershocks; many buildings in the main town have become uninhabitable and have already had to be evacuated, including those of the town hall, the registry office, the court, the district jail, the elementary schools, the kindergarten; the main church was also badly damaged, especially its bell tower, which is almost collapsing, and from which the bells had to be removed.β The town hall was temporarily relocated to premises rented from private individuals until it was decided to proceed with the construction of a new building. The project was entrusted to engineer Pierpaolo De Paulis, who completed it in 1931; the new headquarters was finished at the end of the 1930s.
