The façade of the Duomo of San Valentino serves as the backdrop to this beautiful fountain known as the Samson Fountain. It was made entirely of cast iron at the end of the nineteenth century and purchased by the municipality in 1886. It consists of four basins with floral motifs supported by menacing lions (lower band), a column decorated with olive leaves at the top of which stands the statue of Samson, depicted in the act of freeing himself from his bonds. On the simple cloth tied around his waist, partially covering the lower part of his body, the statue bears the inscription of the foundry: Walter MacFarlane & C. of Glasgow
Meanwhile, the central part comprising the basins and the column was made by the Mac Naughton brothers' foundry, also from Glasgow. The San Valentino fountain belongs to the so-called category of drinking fountains, public fountains, especially common in Great Britain, equipped with cups attached to the structure with metal chains to quench the thirst of passersby. It is located at the center of the staircase leading to the Duomo, on the first landing. The staircase was built according to the design of engineer Salvatore Fasciani, in 1905, as part of a broader reorganization of the town's water supply system, which included a washhouse, small fountains, and a watering trough.
