The Church already existed in 1324, mentioned in the Rationes decimarum. The facade has very few architectural features, except for a very simple portal, a semicircular window, a horizontal cornice made of simple “pinci,” and the sloping double-pitched roof. A stone inscription placed to the side of the church facade indicates the existence of an amphitheater built at his own expense by a magistrate, Sextus Pedius Lusianus Hirrutus, who is credited with the construction of the amphitheater of Chieti, the ancient Teate. The interior of the church consists of a single nave with a semicircular apse and rich Baroque-style side altars, all completed by stucco decorative elements that fill the few spaces left empty by windows and niche altars. On the right wall is a wooden pulpit, freshly restored, which shows interesting craftsmanship; in the apse, on either side of the main altar, are two fine marble angels with candlesticks, placed there by Abbot Don Giovanni Potenza in 1946, while on the counter-facade wall, in the choir loft above the entrance, is the organ, with a single-bay flat-profile wooden case, built by Quirico Gennari in 1819. The Congregation of the Immaculate Conception and of Saint Alphonsus of Liguori were active here, with the Chapel of Purgatory dating from 1660.
